The Hon. George Johnson, M. D. whose distinguished public service career spanned over 40 years, made his contribution by applying his medical expertise to formulating and shaping health care policy and administration in areas benefiting all Winnipeggers and Manitobans.  He served four terms as a Minister in the Manitoba Legislature of which three incorporate the health portfolio and the other education.  Under Dr. Johnson's leadership, the Manitoba Hospital Plan was implemented and the Manitoba Health Services Commission was established.  Dr. Johnson oversaw various community development projects including the introduction of the Universal Polio Vaccination Program.  He also oversaw the introduction of medicare in Manitoba. 

Dr. Johnson is well respected in Manitoba's health and education fields - through his private medical practice and his public service to the community.  As Minister of Education, he chaired the Council of Ministers of Education and set up the Council of Higher Learning which resulted in the establishment of the University of Winnipeg and Brandon University.  He was also involved in the development of technical vocational schools in Brandon, The Pas, and Red River Community College in Winnipeg.  Dr. Johnson is an honourary life member of the Manitoba Medical Association, the Winnipeg Medical Society and the Manitoba Teachers Society.

To add to a very successful and rewarding career, Dr. Johnson became Manitoba's 20th Lieutenant Governor and served Winnipeggers and Manitobans well in representing her Majesty the Queen from 1986 to 1993.  A "Lieutenant Governor's Medal for Literacy" was established under his direction.
